Treatment of Hayfever and Allergic Rhinitis with Kenalog
What is Kenalog?
Kenalog is a GLUCOCORTICOID. It is completely absorbed via an IM
injection. Glucocorticoids are bound to plasma proteins and distributed through the blood. They are metabolised in the liver and excreted by the kidneys. Triamcinolone Acetonide is the acetonide salt form of triamcinolone, a synthetic glucocorticosteriod with
immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory activity. Triamcinolone acetonide binds to specific cytosolic glucocorticoid receptors and subsequently interacts with glucocorticoid receptor response element on DNA and alters gene expression. This results in an induction of the synthesis of certain anti-inflammatory proteins while inhibiting the
synthesis of certain inflammatory mediators.
Consequently, an overall reduction in chronic inflammation and autoimmune reactions are
accomplished. Glucocorticoids a group of CORTICIODSTERIODS that affect
carbohydrate metabolism (GLUCONEOGENESIS, liver glycogen deposition,
elevation of BLOOD SUGAR, inhibit ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC
HORMONE secretion), possess pronounced anti-inflammatory activity.
They also play a role in fat and protein metabolism, maintenance of
atrial blood pressure, alteration of the connective tissue response to
injury, reduction in the number of circulating lymphocytes, and
functioning of the central nervous system.
Symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (Hayfever)
• Sneezing
• Itching in nose, eyes, roof of the mouth, throat, ears
• Blocked nose / runny nose
• The sensation of mucus running down the back of the throat,
called “post-nasal drip”
• Trouble sleeping / feeling tired
• Allergic conjunctivitis/ visual impairment
• Red or watery eyes
• Loss of smell
• Pain around the temples or forehead
• Headache
• Earache
*Patients with a history of asthma may also have:
• Shortness of breath
• Wheeze and cough
• A tight feeling in their chest
